Our Introduction to Family Harm training is designed to equip agencies and community members for disclosures of family harm; whether this be in their personal or work lives. There are two parts to the training.

The workshop runs over two 5-hour days 

Part one focuses on understanding family harm holistically. You will gain an understanding of:

  • What family harm is
  • Related legislation from Aotearoa New Zealand
  • Theories to help build your understanding of the victim-survivor experience
  • The impact of family harm on children 
  • High risk flags to look out for


Part two focuses on how to respond to risk within a family harm context. You will learn:

  • How to assess risk in victim-survivors and their whānau
  • How to safety plan with victim-survivors and their whānau
  • How to utilise other services and to create a “wraparound” response to ensure safety and best outcomes for victim-survivors and their whānau


Participants will receive a certificate at the completion of the training.

Day one is suitable for anyone to attend and is a prerequisite for day 2.

Day 2 takes what participants have learnt in day 1 and guides you on how to implement this into your practice. Topics covered include. 

  • How to assess risk in victim-survivors and their whānau
  • How to safety plan with victim-survivors and their whānau
  • How to utilise other services and to create a “wraparound” response to ensure safety and best outcomes for victim-survivors and their whānau


Day 2 is recommended for all professionals working with clients who may be experiencing family harm, including teachers, medical professionals, community support workers, social workers and therapists.
